I have recently got into an industry and while there is a basic guide on how to build good incoming links and do link building I would love to hear your tactics on the subject. So my question is "How do you do link building for the website (what sites you submit to, if you outsource it to somebody else, and what programs you use to help you in link building) and approximately how much time do you invest doing link building for your clients?"

Once again, thanks for the opportunity to get a bit more personal response, I love your blog and what you guys do.

    Hi,
I hope I can help. I've dabble with link building and in my opinion it is not worth the time spent on it. I rather spent time on writing articles and submiting to ezines which will get me traffic and indexed within 24hrs after approval. And also spend time developing my blog and putting great contents to drive traffic in. In time your site will ranked.

My name "Matt Ng" was indexed within 24hrs after approval in google and i'm on the first page at number 2. My blog, "internet money blog" was also indexed within that time frame, is now on the first page of google at number 2 too. I started blogging in November 2006. Took me less than 2 months to reach the ranking.

But if you really wanna know more. Download this free ebook on SEO by Brad Callen. There are some linking stretegies there.

I would agree with madmatt that link building is not really worth the time or money. I once spend $3,000 on it and got nothing in return. It worked great when Google first came out with their PageRank algorithm but it has gotten so much more sophisticated that basic link building will not get the job done. The best thing you can do is to develop a site with awesome content. These days, blogs can work very well. For example, our blog at http://blog.mindvalleylabs.com is starting to get a ton of traffic from Google because we write excellent original content and are really building a readership over time and gaining quality links. However, 0% of our time is focused on direct link building anymore. We used to do this up to 3 years ago but have not done this since.

However, getting listed in directories such as DMOZ, Yahoo! Director, Wikipedia, can still help but these sites don't focus on exchanging links.
