I would like to start up several membership sites with integrated forums, download areas, and protected areas -- all linked to paypal subscriptions of varying lengths and prices. 1 month = 35, 5 months = 150, etc.

What is the best private site / membership script to use for this? Open source if possible. I would like to host everything on my own server, and not pay a monthly fee.

There are 2 you can check out.

http://www.EasyMembersPro.com - just launched. I have not had the time to review this yet.

ButterflyMarketingScript by Mike Filsaime. - here's a discussion post that deals with this at length.

Look into these 2 and you can't go wrong.

I don't like either of your suggestions - very rough and not many features. I've seen quite a few butterfly sites and they all look the same - unprofessional as well.

I'm looking for a professional solution that I can install on my own server (s) without having to worry about being monitored by "big brother" in the guise of "license management." I'm looking to build dozens of membership sites without a recurring monthly or site license fee.

    Any other suggestions?

    Thanks!

You need to go look in the scripting sites to find something you like. Here are a few:
    http://sourceforge.net/
    http://www.cgi-resources.com/Programs_and_Scripts/
    http://www.scriptsearch.com/

None that I know off. Most of the off the shelf ones are way too complicated. You're better off hiring some programmers on elance to design a custom one for you.

We took that route.

It would cost around $1000 USD only but you'd have full flexibility.

I use amember.... its simple and works... BUUUUT...

when you run the payment reports, it gives you some
    crazy numbers which aren't accurate.

so you have no clue what the site is doing!

    pain the rear end.
