   What is the best community software that:
   
   1) Offers paid subscriptions
   And 2) can handle member responses to individual postings (ie I write an article and members respond to it?
   
   I want to start a community that subscribes paying members, post "lead" articles, and then have subscribers comment on each article for everyone to see. It's not exactly Forum software because I want to post the topics, have it easily searchable and control comments so that say a subriber can only post one comment per topic- more like Amazon.com's "post a review" to their products, etc. Thanks.

   I honestly don't know the answer to your question since your requirements are rather unique. All of our developers swear by drupal and say it is the best content management system but whether you can configure it for your needs I do not know.

   Joomla, open source and free, $12 for a comment component, $30-40 for a subscription component.......
   
   Drupal is very powerful but expensive to customize I have found.....
